The Truth About Cardio: Which Type Is Best for You?

Health & Fitness

Cardiovascular exercise strengthens your heart and lungs, improves endurance and supports mental wellbeing. But with so many options, which type should you choose?

Steady-state cardio

Activities like jogging, cycling or swimming at a moderate, consistent pace are easy to sustain and gentle on recovery. They are excellent for building an aerobic base and can be done most days of the week.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT)

HIIT alternates short bursts of hard effort with rest or easy recovery periods. Sessions are shorter, often 15 to 25 minutes, and can improve fitness efficiently. Because it is demanding, limit it to one to three sessions weekly and ensure you are adequately recovered.

Low-impact options

If you have joint pain or are returning from injury, consider swimming, rowing, elliptical training or brisk walking. These options deliver heart benefits with less stress on knees and hips.

How much do you need?

General guidelines suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week for adults. You can split this into smaller sessions throughout the week.

Choosing what suits you

  • Enjoyment: the best cardio is the one you will actually do.
  • Goals: endurance events favor steady-state work, while time-pressed people may like intervals.
  • Health status: check with a healthcare professional if you have heart conditions or other concerns.

Bottom line: Mix different types of cardio to stay motivated, challenge your body in varied ways and reduce the risk of overuse injuries.
