A Beginner’s Guide to Strength Training

Health & Fitness

Strength training is one of the most effective ways to improve health at any age. It builds muscle, strengthens bones, supports metabolism and makes everyday tasks easier. If you are new to it, here is how to begin safely.

Why strength training matters

Muscle mass naturally declines with age, a process called sarcopenia. Regular resistance training slows this loss, protects joints and reduces the risk of falls and injury. It also improves blood sugar control and can support heart health.

Start with the basics

You do not need a full gym. Begin with a few fundamental movement patterns:

  • Squat: bodyweight squats or goblet squats with a light dumbbell.
  • Hinge: Romanian deadlifts or glute bridges.
  • Push: wall or incline push-ups, then floor push-ups.
  • Pull: dumbbell rows or resistance band rows.
  • Carry or core: planks or farmer’s carries.

How often and how much

Two to three full-body sessions per week, with a rest day between them, is a solid starting point. Perform 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 repetitions for each exercise, using a weight that feels challenging by the last few reps while keeping good form.

Progressive overload

To keep improving, gradually increase the demand. Add a little weight, an extra rep or another set, or slow down the tempo. Small, steady increases are safer than big jumps.

Prioritize technique

Good form protects you from injury. Start light, watch yourself in a mirror or record a video, and consider a session with a qualified trainer to learn the fundamentals.

Recovery and nutrition

Muscles grow during rest, not during the workout. Sleep 7 to 9 hours, eat enough protein across the day and stay hydrated.

Tip: Always warm up for five to ten minutes with light cardio and dynamic movements before lifting.
